WHAT IS CHECK OUT HUNGER?

Check Out Hunger is the Food Bank of the Southern Tier's largest community fundraiser. Local grocers join the Food Bank in the fight against hunger.

During the campaign, shoppers have the option to donate upon check-out. $2, $3 and $5 donation amounts are offered, but there is no cap.

WHAT'S THE IMPACT?

Last year, you helped provide more than 839,270 meals for people in need in Broome, Chemung, Steuben, Schuyler, Tioga, and Tompkins Counties.

WHY IS CHECK OUT HUNGER SO IMPORTANT?

Now more than ever, our neighbors across the Southern Tier are at risk of food insecurity. In fact, since the start of the pandemic we've served 25% more families than ever before!

  • 1 in 4 children across the Southern Tier are facing food insecurity on weekends and school breaks.
  • 1 in 6 adults across the Southern Tier are expected to face food insecurity in 2021.

HOW IS THE FOOD BANK DIFFERENT FROM A PANTRY?

Food Bank: We operate out of a 65,000 square foot warehouse building in Elmira. We distribute food to food pantries, schools and meal sites. We do offer some programs, like Mobile Food Pantries and the Backpack Program, that directly meet the needs of our community.

Food Pantry and Meal Site: Food pantries and meal sites distribute food within their community. They purchase discounted, and sometime free, food from the Food Bank.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Know about the resources available to those in need. We work with more than 140 food pantries and meal sites, and all 41 school districts in our region.

Those in need can use our Food Finder (www.FoodBankST.org) or call 2-1-1 to find the closest resource and the days/hours they are open.

Volunteer! The Food Bank relies on volunteers to help re-pack food and distribute food at our events.
